AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club’s (ABC) veranda was abuzz on Sunday with the finals of the Port Natal open and senior singles.

Doreen Salmond had a well-fought game in the senior semis against eventual champion Moira Hutchison of UCC, while Colin Best of Durban emerged as the men’s senior champion.

In the open finals Bruce Makkink of Westville and Candida Horn of Durban took the honours. Thanks to Dallas Davis and Brian Crause as well as all the markers and flip board operators, bar and kitchen staff, and all members who gave their support. Mention also must be made of seniors Barbara Beamson and Marion Crouch as well as Lynn Joubert in the opens, who all made the quarter finals.

In the club’s men’s handicap singles, Alec Stirzaker beat Guelfo Cobianchi; Greg Veldtman defeated Mike Roberts; Trevor Zulch beat Vince Marriot; and Ian Crouch had a close win over Boet Els. In the men’s drawn pairs Ian Mills and Rob Troughton defeated Duncan Wright and Keith Berry. Robyn Hutton and Jackie Holdrick had a close game in the women’s drawn pairs against Jacqui Fouché and Margaret van Belkum, winning by one shot; and Doreen Salmond and Nicky Stirzaker had a good win over Nita Meumann and Talla Stephens-Viviers.

In the nominated mixed pairs, Jeanne Alexander and Dallas Davis overcame Bobby Henderson and Lys McDonald.

In the men’s monthly 2-4-2, the winners were Alec Stirzaker and Ian Mills. Runners-up were Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder, while second session went to Gerald Chalder-Royle and Shawn Sutherland.

In the women’s monthly trips the winners were Lulu Bingham, Elmarie Young and Bessie Vergottini; and runners-up were Pam Chalder-Royle, Gladys Hughes and Maggie Robertson. First session was won by Hazel Willis, Ruth de Canha and Eileen Ambler, and second session went to Maureen Crawford, Val de Kok and Bernie Bretherton. Sue Welch won the 100 board, and Barbara Beamson won the spider which raised R100,20 for Hospice.

Well done to Doreen Salmond, Marion Crouch, Nita Meumann and Adrienne Robbins, who won their first game in the midweek league. In the Underberg Fives, Steve Anderson, John Winkler, Greg McLeod, Doug Joubert and Mike Groom came 2nd; and Glen Scorgie, Ian Mills, Alec Stirzaker, Mark Brodie and Dave McMillan were 3rd. Well done to all. Congratulations to Marion Crouch, Doreen Salmond and Barbara Beamson who have been invited to play in the national singles in Pretoria in May.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by Maggie Robertson. Mickey Roche’s number came up in the attendance draw but as he was not there, the next draw will be worth R850. Les Brown’s number was chosen in the key draw, but sadly it did not turn in the lock, however he won a bonus R100. As it is Good Friday this week, the next TGIF will be on 1 April, and the key amount will be R2,270.

The list is on the board for club women’s senior singles, as well as inter-club league. The notice is on the board for the annual potjie day which will be on the morning of Sunday, 1 May. This will be mixed trips or fours, two sessions of 11 ends. The cost is R50 which includes tea and sandwiches, as well as potjie lunch. Non-bowlers may have lunch at R30. Cooks are also needed. Ther are great prizes to be won, which includes prizes also for best dressed and lucky draws. The theme is Hawaiian. Put your names up as soon as possible for catering purposes.

Many happy returns are sent this week to Val de Kok, Alec Stirzaker and Mike Pitchers. The club wishes a return to health and strength to those who are not well right now.
