LAST week it was mentioned that one Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) woman was chosen to play in the presidents team for inter-region.
Well, the club is fortunate enough that two other UGC women members who were chosen as well to play the inter-region matches but for the Mkuhla team.
Congratulations to both Annette Gillett and Sabiha Bacaus on being chosen and who would have thought that a ‘little’ club such as Umkomaas would have three women playing in such a prestigious tournament. Congrats to you all, Michelle van der Merwe in the president’s team with Annette and Sabiha in the Mkuhla team – way to go, girls and good luck to you all.
Wednesday was the normal individual stableford and the club welcomed regular visitor from up-country, Selwyn Hesom and overseas visitor, Dave Rickards. The competition itself was very well supported for a Wednesday and the winner was Bing Opie on 40 points. Taking second spot and counting out his opposition was Hans Beuthe from Barrie Taylor in third place, both with 37 points. In fourth slot was Michelle van der Merwe, counting out Garth Wilyman into fifth place, both on 36 points.
Saturday was kind of different, competition-wise, as it was a fourball bonus bogey competition, which was well supported. The club welcomed both Selwyn and Annabelle Hesom, Mike Harvard, Clyde Leisegang and Kevin and Brandon Lydon. The weather was perfect for golf – reason being all the two-clubs scored, which will be mentioned later. The winners in first place were Jimmy Spear and Wally Kent, counting out their nearest rivals Eric Morsner and Derek Airey into second spot, both teams on +12. Taking third place were Graham Coxell and John Gillett on +10. All truly remarkable scores for a bonus bogey competition – well done guys.
The jackpot was shared between Kuben Naidoo and Lesa Vergottini, both on 11 points but the hidden birdie went begging again this week on hole eight. The kitty for the hidden birdie now stands at over R300 – better luck next week. As mentioned there was a slew of two-clubs on the day – Bruce Sutcliffe – fourth; Kuben Naidoo – fourth; Mike Cromhout – 13th; Eric Morsner – 13th; Mike Harvard – 13th; Selwyn Hesom – 17th and last but not least, Jimmy Spear – 17th. This must be a record for two-clubs. Peter Toward took home the easy prize, the attendance draw and Deneys Williamson scooped the ‘birds’ in the football sweep. Congrats to all the players.

The club’s deepest sympathy goes to the Lamminga family on the death of Marlene Lamminga, wife of Sierd, one of the Strand Strikers who plays regularly on a Wednesday. To Sierd and his family, condolences from all at UGC, members’ thoughts are with you all at this sad time.
To all members, relatives and friends of UGC who are feeling poorly – get well wishes to them all – the club hopes you’re all on the mend and will be your normal selves again soon.
