Easter break gives cyclists more saddle time

On Saturday, the Mambas' ride was at Rocky Bay with members doing the 29km route and the new 40km route.

WHENEVER there’s a long weekend, one can be assured the Amanzimtoti Cycling Club roadies and Mambas will be out, enjoying the fact that they do not have to rush back to help out with the usual weekend chores.

They ride that little bit further and have that second cup of coffee with their mates.

When the weather is as beautiful as it was this past weekend, then even the more ‘social’ riders come out to ride. The Easter weekend offered exactly that – perfect weather conditions and loads of time to enjoy what rides the captains had arranged for them. As there were no races for either roadies or Mambas, both groups enjoyed good training rides for upcoming races.

On Saturday, the Mambas’ ride was at Rocky Bay with members doing the 29km route and the new 40km route. If you are wanting hill training, then the 40km trail route is what you are looking for. After having done some exercise, a big hearty breakfast is always welcomed and eaten with no guilty thoughts. Sunday saw a group go to iNsingizi Game Lodge and Spa for an early morning MTB ride followed by a scrumptious Easter Sunday lunch. This game lodge is situated in an unique setting, nestled under kranzes amid rolling hills in Mid Illovo.

On Easter Monday, Mamba riders again could choose to ride Virginia Farm followed by a braai or Renishaw Trails followed by pancakes at the caravan park. All rides were good training for the Marriott Freedom Race next weekend, which starts at Inanda Dam and finishes at Suncoast Casino. Twenty-six years ago, Nelson Mandela was released unconditionally from prison, marking the end of his 27 year sentence behind bars. To celebrate this momentous occasion in South African history, cycling enthusiasts from around South Africa are encouraged to take part in the Freedom Race. This is an exciting mountain biking event created to pay respect to Madiba’s legacy, while also promoting KZN’s unique Heritage Route and countryside.

The roadies enjoyed doing 110km+ training rides, riding up and down the coast. They have the 105km Tour de Durban in mind which takes place on Sunday, 24 April. This is a popular and pleasant race, with the route remaining largely the same as last year, which allows the roadies to improve on their personal best times. Thanks to the support provided by the City of Durban, the event will once again enjoy road closure.

It’s not all about cycling for the Amanzimtoti Cycling Club as this coming Sunday, 3 April, a lot of members will help out at a watering table for the Amanzimtoti Athletics Club’s Dick King Marathon. The club wishes the runners perfect weather and a great race.
