The women also played their Cancer Challenge matches last Saturday and the winners were in the silver division.

A SUCCESSFUL day was had last Thursday, 23 June when Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) hosted the Natal Nomads golf day.

There were over 110 players on the day – even the weather played along after predictions of a cold front and rain being imminent at any given time during the day.

Twenty three UGC members played and supported the Nomads and it’s grateful thanks to the members who lent their private carts to the club. Thank you so much for helping out. All in all, a great day was had by everyone, especially Eric Morsner who won his fair share of the prizes on offer.

To the six women who played league last Sunday, 26 June – Annette Gillett, Sabiha Bacaus, Lesa Vergottini, Michelle van der Merwe, Linda Toward and Denise Nell – congratulations on your 4/2 league win over Scottburgh. Annette and Sabiha won 3/2; Lesa and Michelle won 2/1 but unfortunately Linda and Denise lost their game on the 17th hole. Well done again on the overall win and good luck at your next meet down in Port Shepstone on 31 July.

Because of the Nomads golf day on Thursday, 23 June, there weren’t too many mid-week players on the Wednesday before but those who did play, had a little competition among themselves. Mike and Magda Espach popped in for game and Magda took first spot on a count out from Michelle van der Merwe in second place, both with 35 points. In third slot was Chris Viljoen, also on a count out from Dave Kemp in fourth place, both on 34 points.

Last Saturday, 25 June, UGC hosted the Sanlam Cancer Challenge with varying degrees of success. The club welcomed Rob Finlay’s guest, Richard Thompson to the competition and Errol and Sharon Ann Theron from the cancer association. The winners in the A division were 1st Saga Reddy 39 points; 2nd Deneys Williamson 37 points; 3rd Jacques Kirstein 33 points. In the B division it was Wally Kent in 1st place with 43 points; 2nd Johan Hugo on a count out from Tom Naicker in 3rd place, both with 38 points. The C division was Rob Finlay in 1st place, scooping the count out from Rob Mathias in 2nd spot, both on 38 points with Peter Toward trailing behind in 3rd slot with 34 points.

The women also played their Cancer Challenge matches last Saturday and the winners were in the silver division. Annette Gillett took first place with 41 points and in second spot was Lesa Vergottini with 35 points. In the bronze division, Denise Nell took first place with her 29 points, followed by Bryony Rogers in second spot with 26 points. Linda Toward didn’t have the best day and took third prize. There was a sleeve of balls on offer in a lucky card draw which Devlyn Fraser won. Well done to all the winners – thanks to all the golfers for playing in the Cancer Challenge this year.

This Saturday, 2 July is the Halfway Toyota monthly medal with social golf on Sunday, 3 July. Call the club on 039-973-1042 to book a time and cart availability.

Good news is that the club will host the craft market in the car park on the last Sunday of every month. This is something new for all the locals of Umkomaas to experience without having to travel to Scottburgh. Although it is still quite a small market, with the support of the locals it should grow steadily with the next market day on Sunday, 31 July.

Since it is the school holidays, there is no KidzGolf but the youngsters are more than welcome to head down to the club to practise their skills.

The ‘Geriatrics’ however are still active on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6.45am. They have reduced green fees when you play in their group. Contact Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740. Give these guys a call, they would love to hear from you. You don’t have to be a ‘geriatric’ to play with them either.
