Toti athletes plan ahead for Comrades 2017

On Sunday the Mandela marathon was well supported by members with a chilly start to extremely hot conditions later in the day.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club reports that the 92nd edition of the world’s biggest and oldest ultra marathon, the Comrades Marathon, is all set to be run on 4 June, 2017.

Entries open on 1 September until 30 November or until 20,000 entries is reached.

Early bird entries will set you back R420 before 30 September, thereafter R460. Entry is free to all runners who have completed 25 events or more.

On Sunday the Mandela Marathon was well supported by members with a chilly start to extremely hot conditions later in the day. A total of 15,000 runners took part in this race in memory of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, whose famous words “The greatest glory in living lies not in ever falling but in rising every time we fall” still ring true.

10km: Thembisa Ndlovu 46.26, Kay Balaram 72.00.

The club appeals to companies or a group of 10 people to man and assist at water tables along the route for the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon on 16 October. Water/Coke, ice and bottles plus tables will be supplied by the club. All the club requires is help to give the athletes refreshments as they pass. The club’s 40 year celebration get-together takes place on 17 September at the clubhouse, starting from 2pm. Members are to pay R30 which includes your meat and salads. Non-members cost R15, which includes salads but take your own meat. RSVP with Belinda by 12 September for catering purposes on 083-408-0639. A cash bar will be available.

Reverse time trial takes place on the first Wednesday of every month. There is also a bring and braai, with fires ready from 6.30pm. Note the next one is on 7 September.

Upcoming races: 11 September SAPS Striders Heritage Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium 21.1km run/walk and 10km run/walk starting at 6.30am. This is a pre-entry event.

25 September Ethekwini Township to Township Marathon 42.2km/21.1km run race starts at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi at 5.30am and finishes at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu. Pre-entries close on 20 September.

Entries for the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon on 16 October are now open. This race will run/walk from Hutchison Park and back, due to the damage to the Metro Rail railway line. Closing date for this pre-entry race is 8 October. Visit https://www.eventtiming.co.za/gossbalfe

Club members cannot take part in the main race and as such, a helpers run will take place on 8 October where members can use their times as a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier.

With regards to time trial duties, should you not be able to do your duties as per the list, make arrangements for someone to stand in for you.

All athletes must note that reflective belts are mandatory for time trials.

Weekly time trials are on Wednesdays with walkers starting at 5.30pm and runners at 6pm (both over 4km and 8km). Visitors are welcome to join in and should meet at the clubhouse at Hutchison Park. on Saturdays there is an 11km run and walk from the clubhouse at 5.30am for walkers and 6am for runners. Tea, coffee and biscuits served afterwards. Visitors are more than welcome to join in and keep fit.
