Garth sinks his perfect fluke

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) has a new member of the hole-in-one club.
Congratulations to Garth Wilyman on his ‘perfect fluke’ last Wednesday on the fourth hole. Welcome to the club, Garth.
The composite league boys played their final match last Sunday, with startling results. This league is played between Umkomaas, Royal Durban and Selborne, with matches played at each course. Before the first tee off, Selborne was ahead by three points. They thought they had a safe lead and would show the other two teams the way, sadly underestimating the Umkomaas boys on home ground. After much ‘talk’ and jibing among the three teams beforehand, it was Umkomaas who were the clear winners of both the match and the actual league for the year. The three point head-start that Selborne had was eaten up relatively quickly and Umkomaas won by 43 points at the close of play in the afternoon. So, it just goes to show that with determination and grit, UGC’s boys are tops. Well done guys and congratulations on winning the composite league trophy which now sits, very proudly, at UGC.
Wednesday’s individual stableford welcomed Claude Osborne and it was nice to see Etienne Botha at the club too. It was Garth Wilyman and his hole-in-one that made the day special. Congrats again Garth on the hole-in-one, which actually helped win him the competition with 43 points, way ahead of second placed Bing Opie and third placed Wally Kent, both on 37 points. Taking fourth spot was Peter Toward with 36 points.
Saturday was the much anticipated alliance league game and with the teams running out of months to play, the turn-out was good. Club captain, Jimmy Spear welcomed Pat, Raymond Ntombela and Johan van der Schyff at prize-giving. Although the weather was a bit dodgy on Saturday, there were almost 50 players ready to support their teams, well done to them all.
Winners were The Little Red Riding Hoods on 88 points, counting out second placed The Naidoos, also on 88 points. In third spot were the Blue Brothers with 87 points, counting out the Mambas, the Bar Flies, the XLC’s and last but by no means least, the Chancers, all on 87 points. The jackpot was won by Renzo Avellini with 10 points and because the hidden birdie was won last week, it starts afresh this week with the hidden birdie (hole 14) as a carry over. The attendance draw was won by Derek Airey and John Gillett scooped the ‘birds’ in the football sweep with Lincoln City FC.
