UGC’s open Spring alliance golf hailed a success
Last Sunday's "Bash" was a great success, with players from as far afield as Richard's Bay joining the locals.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club’s (UGC) women’s section hosted a very successful open Spring alliance day last Saturday, 2 September.
All the players, including all the craft market stallholders, had a thoroughly enjoyable day with lots of golf, but above all, loads of fun and laughter too.
Sincere thanks to all visitors and sponsors but also to the women for organising all the wonderful prizes.
To Linda, Bryony, Vlasta and Patricia and their helpers, Sharon and Julie, thank you, the support of the club is admirable.
The winners on a score of 92 points were Tom Naicker, Dean Naicker, Julian Gounden and Colin Govender with Jimmy Pickavance, Dave Mulroy, Bing Opie and Jacques Kirstein in second place, on a count out from Mike Cromhout, Peter Toward, Linda Toward and Bryony Rogers in third spot. They were followed by Nelson Moonsamy, Saga Reddy, Patrick Ndlovu and Jeff Govender in fourth slot, all with 89 points.
There were more prizes to be won, too many to mention. Winners of the nearest the pin prizes were Christopher Pillay fourth; Jeff Govender ninth; Mike Cromhout 13th and Lisa-Marie Kruger 17th. Alf Hopf took the straightest drive for the men on the 18th with Magda Espach doing it for the girls with her straightest drive on the 18th. Among the main competition, the players had to worry about their ‘purple ball’ with some doing very well while others lost their purple ball somewhere out on the course. The winners, with a good score of 43 points were Nelson, Saga, Patrick and Jeff. Well done guys.
At last, the the Tim Clark golf bag has been drawn and the winner (who bought many tickets) was Dick Whittington. Well done. Tash Naicker won the raffle the women ran on the day. Congratulations to all the winners and players, the support is appreciated.
Last Sunday’s ‘bash’ was a great success, with players from as far afield as Richards Bay joining locals. The number of players has grown over the months the ‘bash’ has been played, which is good news for players with low handicaps, as there’s more competition. Some of the players were away playing on the Sunshine Tour, good luck to them all. This week’s winners were Mlo with 43 points followed by Henceford ‘Gupta’ Zama on a count out from Sizwe Mkhize in third place and Fizele Sineke in fourth spot, all on 37 points. All the prizes are cash and anyone willing to take on these guys are more than welcome to play at the next meeting on the Sunday, 17 September at around 10am under the lapa.
Wednesday’s individual stableford was won by Barrie Taylor on a count out from second-placed Garth Wilyman, both players had 37 points. Hans Beuthe (nice to see Hans again) took home the third prize, on a count out yet again, from Piet Vermaak in 4th spot, both on 35 points.
Next Saturday, 9 September is the monthly medal and mug competition, a week later than the norm due to the women’s open alliance day last Saturday with social golf on Sunday, 10 September. Call the club to book a tee time and carts on 039-973-1042.
A reminder that the two-day Aliwal Stroll Golf Tournament will take place on both Saturday, 23 September and Sunday, 24 September at UGC, bearing in mind that Monday, 25 September is a recognised public holiday (Heritage Day observed). Umkomaas boasts quite a few lovely B&B establishments in the area to accommodate visitors – browse around the website for more details. To book your tee time for the Aliwal Stroll for the two days, call the club on 039-973-1042.
The usual Geriatric mornings are on Tuesdays and Fridays starting at 6.45am. Contact Graham on 083-325-5705. Later on Friday afternoons six-pin starts at 2.45pm. Score cards are in the bar. On Saturdays the youngsters take on KidzGolf and that starts every Saturday in the school term at 8am for an hour with coach Devlyn.
