Four Winkle lifesavers make SA squad
This past weekend members attended the coaching course at Scottburgh with Winkle being well represented by nippers, juniors, seniors and nipper coaches.

WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club’s (WSLC) members have been very busy over the past few weeks.
The third of the junior/senior carnivals was held in Durban on Sunday, 15 October with very challenging surf conditions and the star of the show was Gene Prato who won the iron man and third in the surf ski and flags events, despite competing against some of the current Springbok lifesavers.
Tyler Main also had a good day, coming second in the women’s flags event. The rest of the Winkle girls also achieved some top 10 placings.
The provisional KZN Surf lifesaving squad was announced, with Winkle having four representatives – Gene Prato (rose among the thorns), Kelly Fell (Winkle’s current Springbok), Tyler Main and Dana Erasmus.
On the same day the nippers also competed at their carnival in Durban and WSLC was well represented with Keith Ward (flags) and Alex Isemonger (long run) the stars on the local club’s show. Many other top placings were achieved by the rest of the team.
Training has been well attended with the new nippers getting into the swing of things even though the weather has not been the greatest. The enthusiasm of the nippers, especially the younger children, is always a pleasure to watch.
Last weekend members attended the coaching course at Scottburgh, with Winkle being well represented by nippers, juniors, seniors and nipper coaches. Initial reports indicate the course was worthwhile and the club looks forward to the nipper coaches passing on the information gained to the nippers at training.
On the social side, the club has been a hive of activity with all the rugby and last Friday night was no exception with a visit from the Warners counterparts and the Currie Cup final on Saturday. Club manager Johan Nel and wife Ronel are doing a great job on the social side, which is appreciated by all members.
This Friday night the club hosts its annual Halloween party which is always a great evening with the nippers dressing up and having a lot of fun. All members are welcome to attend. On Sunday the second nipper carnival takes place in Durban where some great results are expected, especially with the club’s current talent.
See you on the beach.
