Volunteers band together to fix flood-ravaged MTB bridges

This past Sunday, the club arranged for a work party to tackle one section of the track.

AFTER enjoying an enjoyable ride in and around Toti, be it on the hills of Illovo on a mountain bike or heading south on the road, when the Amanzimtoti Cycling Club asks for help, all members gather around and help.

Due to the torrential downpour Toti experienced a couple of weeks ago, a lot of the sports centre’s track was washed away.

Of the 11 bridges that the captain, Barry Walker and his team so devotedly built, only two were completely washed away. While the remaining nine were still there, they were not safe to ride across. A lot of work is required to get the track back on track.

Last Sunday, the club arranged for a work party to tackle one section of the track. Lots of enthusiastic Mambas and Roadies, together with the club’s development team from Umlazi (who were 10 strong), came to help. It was certainly the case of many hands made light work. They started work at 1pm and by 3.30pm the switchback section was once again ready for all to ride, walk or run.

Amanzimtoti Sports Centre (ASC) is open to the public to use and the management strives to provide the community with the best possible facilities in a safe, clean environment. The majority of the work, like this past weekend however, is done by volunteers and the club wishes to thank the great number of members who came out and did a fantastic job. It is members like these that make the club as great as it is.

There will be another work party this coming weekend, so for those of you who couldn’t make the last one, or are willing to help again, call Barry Walker on 083-459-8253 and diarise 1pm on Sunday, 5 November.
