Toti High water polo teams compete at nationals

For all but one player, it was the first time taking part in the co-ed national tournament.

AMANZIMTOTI High School was one of the top 20 co-ed schools in the country to take part in the National Co-Ed Water Polo Tournament from October 5 to 9.

Both the first-team boys and first-team girls attended the national tournament held at Thomas More College in Kloof. The format of the event was a round-robin, giving each school a chance to play against the other.

“Training and preparation went very well. Our fitness levels were excellent. We used Aqua Swimming Academy in winter for five months. Through the expertise of the owner and swim fitness coach Jess Lowings, the facility has helped improve the athletes’ level of fitness,” said coach Greg Thomas.

He said the event itself was excellent, however, the unfavourable weather conditions meant shorter, more frequent games with less rest time.

Overall, the boys’ team placed 12th and the girls 13th. “The learners had a blast. There were 15 new caps (players) that attended the tournament – only one had competed before. The school and I are extremely proud of our athletes,” said Thomas.

The teams are currently playing in the official local KZN league until the end of February next year.
