THE Amanzimtoti Rugby Club has appointed a new first-team captain whose main responsibility will be to contribute to the growth of the club. Michael Mthethwa made his debut for the Toti club in 2017 when he joined the third team that was coached by George Snodey, and through hard work, made his way into the first team.

In a statement, the club said Michael took up rugby as a nine-year-old when a neighbour who was emigrating gave him sports equipment that included scrum caps and a rugby ball.

“Michael would go through the local school and club system, gaining greater insight and engaging in ‘rugga’, in its contact or touch format. In this journey, he was exposed to good rugby coaches and administrators who wanted to grow the game of rugby to a wider audience. This experience would deepen his commitment to playing rugby,” it said.

In 2019, he won the Junior Murray Cup and Team of the Year award while a member of the club’s second team.
Michael is currently a PhD candidate, and through his work, he aims to influence the design of health and wellness programmes offered by student service departments in educational institutions.
