Action-packed Uhuru Rugby Festival held in Amanzimtoti

The festival during the Easter holiday was created to provide an opportunity for teams that may not have the resources to participate in larger festivals and for teams to compete against opponents they don't usually face before the school rugby season starts.

THIS year’s Uhuru Rugby Festival, which welcomed teams from various schools in the KwaZulu-Natal region, took place at Hutchison Park from March 28 to April 1.

According to Muzombwe Rashidi of Konke Sports SA, the festival is a celebration of peace and freedom in the form of tier-two schoolboy rugby in the province.

“The festival was created to provide an opportunity for teams that may not have the resources to participate in larger festivals during the Easter holidays,” he said.

Sbongakonke Hlengwa of Queensburgh High School breaks away from the opposition.

Rashidi said the main goal of the festival is to allow teams to compete against opponents they do not regularly face, and for coaches to experiment with different team compositions before the schoolboy rugby season begins. This year, the festival was held at the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club.

“Thanks to the support of SuperSport Schools Live, the games were live-streamed nationally, giving the young players a chance to showcase their skills. We are hopeful that the Uhuru Rugby Festival will eventually expand to include teams from all provinces in the future,” he said.

Rashidi added that the festival would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors such as Hatfield Ford Toti, aQuellé, Pam Golding Toti and others.
