PEYTON Johnstone (8) of Amanzimtoti is competing at the KZN JKA Champs that takes place today ( April 13).

Peyton won two gold medals at both the KZN and SA JKA Champs last year. She also earned her SA JKA colours and was named Karateka of the Year at her dojo which further solidified her status as a rising star in the martial arts community.

Behind Peyton’s success lies a strong support system, particularly her grandfather, Russ Andraos, who shares her passion for karate.

“The art offers self-control, discipline, dedication, character and self-defence. She loves to compete and wants to become a sensei one day. Last year, she achieved 22/24 points from various tournaments, which was higher than anyone in any grade in her dojo. We are very proud of her and her accomplishments,” he said.

Peyton is looking forward to the upcoming event and has been training twice a week at the dojo as well as at home with her grandfather.

When she is not on the mat practising, she enjoys surfing and swimming at the beach.

Andraos said he is confident that she will, once again, be selected for the SA JKA Champs which take place in Johannesburg next month.
