Melanie Hamilton, a parent of one of the karatekas, said the event was nothing short of exhilarating. “Karate enthusiasts from various dojos across the region gathered to showcase their skills, determination and sportsmanship. The medal count for Toti reflects the sheer talent and commitment of these karatekas,” she said.

Toti clinched 14 gold medals, 20 silver and 37 bronze.

“This is a historic achievement for Toti at the KZN level. These numbers not only demonstrate individual excellence but also underscore the strength of our karate community. Some competitors found themselves pitted against gold or silver medalists, making their journey even more challenging. It’s a testament to their resilience that they stepped onto the mat with unwavering determination,” said Hamilton before giving thanks to the dedicated instructors who have been instrumental in the karateka’s successes.

For those heading to Johannesburg for the next leg of the journey, the real training begins now. “The KZN championships were a stepping stone; the national stage awaits,” said Hamilton.
