Skating momentum builds in Amanzimtoti

More than double the amount of skaters participated in the KZN Provincial Figure Skating Championships compared to 2025.

THE thrilling SA Figure Skating Association’s (SAFSA) KZN Provincial Figure Skating Championships were held at the Galleria Ice Rink to much fanfare on June 7.

SAFSA KZN provincial chairperson, Jo Cossavella, said the 19 athletes who took to the ice were more than double the number of competitors who participated in the same competition in 2025.

“This growth reflects our commitment to building KZN figure skating brick by brick. Seeing our skaters’ progress makes every challenge worthwhile,” said Cossavella.

To support skaters at every stage of their development, Cossavella said the championships are divided into two distinct parts.

“The bronze section is an excellent way for skaters to experience the atmosphere of a championship in a supportive environment. This category does not require the skaters to pass their level tests to participate. The competitive sections are for the more advanced athletes, and skaters are required to have passed specific level tests and mastered the necessary technical elements. The championship section is for skaters who meet specific minimum score requirements in addition to passing their levels and meeting specific technical requirements,” she said.

To continue building on the momentum that has been created, the organisation will welcome renowned Italian coach, Luca Delmatte, to Amanzimtoti from June 19 to 21. Based in Bergamo, Delmatte brings world-class expertise from a high-performance environment that develops athletes around the world. He will do on-ice and off-ice workshops to help skaters align their performance with international best practices.

Public skating sessions are available at the Galleria Ice Rink. More information and session times can be found at https://theicerink.co.za/galleria/

Upcoming events:
July 23 – The second development programme will kick off.
