New champions claim crown at SPAR schoolgirls’ hockey
After a thrilling grand final showdown among 10 teams, a new champion claimed the crown of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls' Hockey Challenge.
A NEW winner has stepped up to the plate at the grand finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) on July 26, in the form of Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School.

Wrapping up two days of hockey, the Durban North regional winner met a team from St John’s DSG, representing the Pietermaritzburg central regional in the final. In a riveting conclusion Our Lady of Fatima won after playmaker Charly-Rose Boyall netted a rocket in the 23rd minute.
Publicist Sophie Thompson said Amanzimtoti High School (AHS) made a welcome return to the grand finals, running onto the St Mary’s turf for the seventh time since the tournament’s inception in 2011, representing the Durban South Region.
“The Toti team came up against some hockey giants in their pool games, opening up with a huge fixture against defending champs and host school, St Mary’s DSG. The home school was on the prowl for their eighth title and started off their challenge with a convincing win against the visitors (7-0) in the opening game of the weekend,” said Thompson.
AHS’ next two fixtures were against travelling teams, St Patrick’s College and Ferrum High School. They lost the first 0-1 and held their own in the 0-0 battle against Ferrum. Their final pool game was against eventual silver medallists, St John‘s DSG, losing 0-7.

At the end of the pool games on Saturday, Ferrum and Toti were tied on points with both recording three losses and a draw against each other. Ferrum, having a better goal difference, advanced to the seventh and eighth playoff.
Turning their attention to the cross-pool playoffs on the second day, AHS met Grantleigh School from Richards Bay in the second plate qualifier. The Zululand team knocked in two goals to reach the plate semi-final, while AHS faced Wartburg Kirchdorf School from the uMvoti and oThukela regional. In a tightly contested game, Wartburg slotted in an all-important goal, claiming victory and ninth place.
Amanzimtoti had to settle for tenth overall.
Over the 10 regionals, matric students have been adding their name to a lucky draw to win a bursary through a Durban-based, tertiary institution. Amahle Khumalo from Vryheid Hoërskool won a year’s bursary at the Sport Science, Coaching and Management college valued at R89 000.
