VIDEO: Ice Bucket Challenge epic fails!

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, has gone viral on social media in the last few months.

The ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ sweeping across the world is inevitably raising a lot for research into treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the US and motor neuron disease (MND) in other parts of the world, but challenges gone wrong are, according to a CNN report, also leaving some with major headaches.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, has gone viral on social media in the last few months. It is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one’s head or donating to the ALS Association in the United States.

Termed the ‘Harlem Shake of the Summer’ by Mashable, the challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads. A common stipulation is that nominated people have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation.

According to The New York Times, people shared more than 1.2 million videos on Facebook between June 1 and August 13 and mentioned the phenomenon more than 2.2 million times on Twitter since July 29. Prior to the widespread internet sensation, public awareness of the ALS was relatively limited. It is often referred to as ‘Lou Gehrig’s disease’, after baseball great Lou Gehrig who publicly revealed his diagnosis. Years later, renowned English theoretical physicist and author Stephen Hawking again increased awareness of the motor neuron disease (MND).

While the challenge is obviously bringing about a lot of support for a worthy cause – with a broad range of celebs and politicians from South Africa’s former rugby star and MND sufferer Joost van der Westhuizen to former US president George W Bush receiving an icy shower – some of the epic fails, as captured in CNN’s video footage, will leave you speechless!
