Sports Minister: ‘We lost a winner’

Gone too soon: 'Just as the star illuminates, criminals rob us of his brightness,' tweeted Minister of Sports and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula.

JOHANNESBURG – Weighing in on the tragic death of Bafana Bafana Captian, Senzo Meyiwa (27) , Minister Fikile Mbalula has echoed sentiments that no grave is big enough for Meyiwa.

On the morning of October 27, Mbalula greeted Twitter followers with the shocking news. “Good morning SA, we are deeply shocked by the passing away of Senzo Meyiwa. It’s a sad day for South Africa, his family and Orlando Pirates.

“The death of Senzo Meyiwa has robbed this country of an icon and a legend in the making. Senzo died at the time when his career was reaching full maturity, and the nation and the world were still expecting a lot from him,” said Mbalula.

SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble said: “It is still unreal, the news is just sinking in. We cannot believe he could be gone so soon when he was at the prime of his game for both club and country. Our deepest condolences goes to his family, friends, relatives as well as football lovers at large.”

Meyiwa allegedly died protecting his girlfriend, Afropop singer Kelly Khumalo. This information was confirmed by Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane.

“Two guys entered the house and demanded cellphones, money and other valuables. Senzo tried to protect Kelly, because one of the men had a gun pointed at her,” said the MEC.

Meyiwa was shot in the back when he jumped to protect his girlfriend. The bullet went through his chest, although Kelly Khumalo escaped unharmed, but she is traumatised by the incident.
