JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The entire Johannesburg South is being terrorised by a man and a woman claiming to be rightful owners of properties. This situation is not improving but getting worse.
Almost every week people phone the COURIER to complaining that men come to their homes and threaten and beat them if they do not leave the premises as they bought the houses at auctions, and often no formal court order is produced and the right protocols are not followed.
DA Councillor Rashieda Landis and ANC Councillor Sidney Radebe have intervened in such cases more than once in the last two or three months.
Some people are actually new owners of the properties, but do not follow the right processes. In fact, on Friday November 5, one lady who claimed to have bought a property hired fake Red Ants who were armed to the teeth with sjamboks and sticks to try and evict occupants in Turffontein, President Street.
La Rochelle, Turffontein, Rosettenville, and Bellavista have suffered greatly from this unfortunate crime.
DA’s Tyrell Meyers, Rashieda Landis and ANC’s Sidney Radebe all encourage people to open cases, because it is not easy for the police to intervene when people do not open cases and want to fight for themselves.
In almost every attempt, occupants of the houses end up losing their valuables, because the people who claim to be the rightful owners do not do things the right way.
These men who claim to own the properties start revamping the houses and then later want to collect rent.
The problem noticed so far is that the occupants do not report these illegal evictions and harassment, because often they are also not the rightful owners of the properties. These are houses whose lawful owners cannot be found.
