Home for abandoned babies hit by crime
Love of Christ Ministries (TLC) is a home for abandoned babies and has been in existence for 22 years.
EIKENHOF – During that time they have placed into adoption almost 900 babies in wonderful, caring, forever families.
Unfortunately, the home in Eikenhof has become a target of criminal activity and with an informal settlement about four kilometres from the property, vulnerable.
Earlier this year, thieves broke into the laundry and the storeroom next door where all the new baby clothes were locked up and stole everything. They also went into the storage shed and stole a number of items. In another serious break-in they lost all their computers and other office equipment. “We installed alarms, a passive motion sensor and outside beams and also passives in the classrooms, which are now our offices,” said Thea Jarvis (founder/ director of TLC).
Thea’s daughter, Pippa, lives on the property next door with 18 children aged between six months and 16 years and her property has been repeatedly targeted by criminals this past year, resulting in car batteries, wheels and trailer wheels, other tools and very expensive car-fixing tools and equipment being stolen. “The insurance refused to pay, although the criminals broke in through the roof as the doors were too secure,” added Thea.
Two gruesome murders on adjoining properties have occurred and two weeks ago their neighbours on the eastern border were targeted. One of the residents left his house in the early hours to investigate suspicious noises and was shot at close range and died instantly. His brother who ran to his defence was shot several times in his arm. “When our neighbour was killed we heard that this particular gang have killed five other people in the same manner, in the last few months,” added Thea.
“We need assistance so we can protect our property with more security and we will be very grateful for any contributions towards this cause,” said Thea.
