Dangerous driving: Incident of road rage results in altercation
Incidents of road rage often result in altercations and injuries in some cases although motorists still engage in it
GLENANDA – A road rage incident that took place at a roundabout in Glenanda, on July 21, left a resident shaking and in a state of disbelief at how she had been treated on the road.
Rude gestures and verbal insults were just some of the actions that a young man driving a black BMW directed at the principal of Kinston Christian Academy, Marina van Wyk, on the corner of Lois Avenue and Vorster Avenue.
The aggressive driver of the BMW allegedly swayed his vehicle on the road, blocking van Wyk who was trying to drive to her school.
“This young man pulled the finger on me after I stopped and said he would mess me up,” recalled van Wyk.
The spat was caused by motorists coming from Lois Avenue, who would not stop and give way to other vehicles attempting to go around the circular intersection.
Finally, van Wyk decided to quickly enter in front of the approaching vehicle driven by the young man, resulting in the road rage incident.
JMPD superintendent Wayne Minnaar said victims of road rage incidents can have recourse, especially if they managed to jot down the vehicle registration of the individual who started an altercation or made threats of violence to another driver.
“Victims of road rage need to go to the nearest police station to report whatever happened, then the police have to open a case of crimen injuria,” Minnaar explained.
Van Wyk said she would be following up the matter with the relevant authorities.
