Water meters stolen

Other streets in the South that are affected are: Ferreira Street, Kenilworth; Ben Alder Road, The Hill and corner Petunia Street and Park Lane, Rosettenville.

A NEW costly trend in the South is slowly creeping in: water meters are being stolen and thousands of litres are being wasted as a result.

In the past three weeks, the COURIER has been flooded by pleas from the residents whose meters have been stolen.

Laretta Riviere from the Little Ones Educate day care and crèche in Mabel Street, Rosettenville said the leak wasted hundreds of litres of clean water. “We lodged a complaint to Joburg Water and I must say two other meters in our streets have been also stolen,” she said.

Mike Brits who lives in Turffotein Street, Kenilworth suffered the same fate as the water meter outside his yard was stolen. “This is frustrating as you do not have water in that period while clean water streamed down the road,” he said.

Also Myrna Botes’ water meter was stolen. She is an 82-years-old pensioner who lives in Southern Kliprivierisberg at The Hill Extension 1. “Something needs to be done about this. We do not have water because of these thieves. I heard that they sell these water meters for R24 and it cost the municipality about R1 000 to buy and fix these water meters,” she said.

Other streets in the South that are affected are: Ferreira Street, Kenilworth, Ben Alder Road, The Hill and corner Petunia Street and Park Lane, Rosettenville.

COURIER contacted Eleanor Mavimbela from Joburg Water to shed some light on these thefts, but by the time of going to press she had not responded.
