Residents need help

Robertsham residents need help to deal with poor service maintenance and speeding taxis in Kimberly Road.

RESIDENTS of Robertsham are appealing to the Johannesburg Municipality and local council to prevent the suburb from deteriorating.

According to locals who met with the COURIER, Kimberly Road has turned into an uncontrollable mess.

Taxis speed down the road during peak hours, a life-threatening tendency that could harm locals, especially those living in the houses along the road, as they have to try to reverse out of the properties.

Locals from the mosque on the road, Adnaan Laher, Yoonus Bhamse and Saleem Jassat, informed the COURIER that the mosque has been having problems with speeding taxis and it is a sad situation.

Members of the mosque paid the council to have parking spaces created at the sides of the road, but, according to them, they cannot use the parking because of the way in which motorists drive on the road.

“We have video clips showing how taxi drivers use the road as a one-way in the direction of their convenience, and this is a danger to other people,” said Adnaan and Saleem.

”The area is also not maintained, the grass on the side of the road has not been cut in a long time, the fence separating this road from the M1 highway has collapsed and there have been many instances where people have robbed the locals and run off by crossing the highway.

”The drain here is just a disaster; the water that flows in the sewerage system starts pouring out when it rains, because people dump stuff in the sewerage pipes and, subsequently, the water cannot flow freely,” said Adnaan and Saleem.

Ward 55’s Clr Rashieda Landis met with the community to discuss the matter and the COURIER informed all the city’s companies that can assist, such as JMPD, Pikitup, JRA and City Park about the challenge.

JRA has already responded and sent out information about what would be needed from the residents, so that the road could be qualified for their desired speed humps.

“As the ward councillor, I have communicated with Pikitup and City Parks, and they have both committed to work with the community members to clean up the area,” said Landis.

”We will decide on a date. I also want to inform the residents of Ward 55 that I am retaining my position as ward councillor and I am looking forward to working with the community to make the ward better.”
