THE City of Johannesburg is encouraging locals to blow the whistle on drug dealers terrorising residents and hurting the livelihood of those purchasing illegal substances.
A workshop was held in Soweto on Friday, November 25, also marking the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which is in its 16th year.
City of Johannesburg social worker Dudu Bojosi said there is a direct link between drug abuse and gender-based violence. She also encouraged residents to partake and help the city fight drug abuse.
“The City is serious about fighting substance abuse and gender-based violence and ensuring that women and children live in communities they feel safe in,” said Dudu.
The City partnered with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to tackle substance abuse.
Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba, together with MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, launched a K9-Narcotics Tactical Unit to deal with explosives, counterfeit goods, hijackings and robberies, but with a focus on narcotics (working with SAPS), vehicle tracking, and confidential information, on Monday, November 21.
