MEMBER of Parliament Manny de Freitas graced two schools in the South with his presence, alongside ward councillors, to monitor their progress and find out if the schools had everything they needed to perform their mandate.
“I am so proud of Kenilworth Secondary School and how much they achieved despite lacking resources. They are an inspiration to all schools, particularly those that are underprivileged,” said de Freitas.
He said that it was for that reason that he visited the school again, despite accepting a recent invitation from the principal of the school, Morgan Radebe, to join them in their celebration of the matric results.
“Our visit was an opportunity to discuss more deeply with Mr Radebe some of the challenges that they face and if there is any way that we could assist the school,” explained de Freitas.
Manny de Freitas also visited Hoërskool Die Fakkel, which has other challenges. De Freitas said that this school had a slight improvement in their matric results. “Hoërskool Die Fakkel is also an inspiration but in a different way – as, despite the matriculants not coming from wealthy homes, they had pledged to donate their uniforms to other learners at that school.
“This was an initiative completely by the matrics themselves. This type of social action gives hope for South Africa and our young people, who demonstrate their good hearts.
“At this visit, we also had an opportunity to meet the school principal, Mr Attie Botes, who is doing the best he can within the meagre resources available to him,” said de Freitas.
De Freitas also said that in the midst of all the negativity one hears of daily, he was encouraged and motivated by these two shining examples in the South.
