SOCIAL Crime Prevention, Women’s Network, CPF, Youth Desk and JMPD members held various crime awareness campaigns focused on robbery and hijacking in Oakdene and Linmeyer, recently.
These are some of the safety tips communicated to residents about robbery:
• Avoid walking alone in dark and quiet streets.
• Avoid carrying valuables when jogging or walking.
• Avoid wearing expensive jewellery when walking.
• Always be aware of your surroundings.
The communities were also given tips on how to prevent a hijacking:
• Keep vehicle doors locked, windows closed and valuables out of sight, especially when approaching an intersection.
• Beware of people asking for directions.
• Do not try to remove or move obstacles on the road. If it is safe to do so, drive around these and report it to the nearest police station.
• In the event of being hijacked, remain calm and try to memorise distinctive features, such as scars, tattoos or accent, of the perpetrators.
