IT was an important week for Johannesburg as the first State of the City Address was delivered by Mayor Herman Mashaba and the new council chambers was inaugurated, on May 3.
“In just nine months, so much has been done by this administration and the mayor has clearly demonstrated his commitment to delivering the best possible service to residents,” said Manny de Freitas, Member of Parliament for the Johannesburg South constituency.
He listed some of the administration’s achievements:
• While the ANC administration handed over no title deeds in 2013/14, under Mayor Mashaba, over 2 800 title deeds have been handed out and a further 1 100 are ready to be handed over to beneficiaries.
• A newly-created Internal Investigations Unit has exposed almost R2 billion in fraud and corruption.
• More than 7 000 Small, Medium and Micro- Sized Enterprises were assisted by the SME hubs over the past nine months, in order to reverse Johannesburg’s high unemployment rate.
• The extension of operating hours at more clinics across the city, to be open until 10pm on week nights, allowing residents access to healthcare without losing a day’s pay at work.
• The K9-Narcotics Unit has been a major success in curbing drug-related crimes across Johannesburg, including a major drug bust in Glenvista, estimated at R 9.5 million.
• The mayor’s recruitment of 1 500 new officers for the JMPD is a welcome addition to keep residents in Johannesburg safe.
• An independent skills audit was initiated in order to improve service delivery and ensure that city workers truly work for the people of the metro.
