Meter taxi driver hijacked at gunpoint

The gunman instructed the taxi driver to move to the passenger seat and he did as he was told.

A METER taxi driver was hijacked at gunpoint in the Booysens area on May 30 at about 7.30pm.

The complainant alleges that he was driving the Toyota Corolla when he received a transport request. When he arrived at the address he waited for about five minutes. He then saw an unknown man pointing a firearm at him.

The gunman instructed the taxi driver to move to the passenger seat and he did as he was told.

Two other men then climbed into the car.

The complainant was dropped on the side of the road next to an open veld. The three suspects then took off in the taxi. The complainant said the suspects were all Zulu-speaking.

Booysens Police communications officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik said this is only one of the cases of hijacking of a meter taxi reported to them.

“This crime is on the increase and is a concern to the management of Booysens SAPS. The management of Booysens SAPS is appealing to meter taxi drivers to be careful when picking up clients and to be aware of their surroundings,” she said.
