Hard-hitting messages against women abuse the order of the day at The Hill

Messages were clear: end violence against women, stop women killings, and fight against femicide.

ALTHOUGH it is an uphill battle to fight the scourge of femicide that has engulfed South Africa, teachers and learners at The Hill High held a #Women’slivesmatter assembly on June 1.

This assembly was in light of the recent plight of women who have been killed by either their partners or people they know. The hall was packed with girl learners.

Messages were clear: end violence against women, stop women killings and fight femicide.

SPEAK-OUT: Khanyisile Sibiya was vocal on stage, urging woman to be proud.

Some of the placards that the learners hoisted carried statements such as “I am a woman, not your punching bag”, “My flesh, my heart and my faith not for you to abuse” and “Happiness can be found even in the darkest times, but when you cannot find light don’t blame me and hurt me for that”.

Learners staged a play about a woman forced to tolerate her abusive husband because he takes care of her and her mother. It was followed by a monologue by Khanyisile Sibiya who spoke about the pride of a woman.

A slideshow, featuring recent cases of women who were murdered by their partners, followed and the impact of this was visible among the learners and other guests in the hall.

Learner Megan Hlahla led others to light candles as a symbol of “enough is enough” and the school choir concluded the assembly with songs of comfort.

In May 2014, The Hill High held a similar assembly during the #BringBackOurGirls campaign during which they prayed for the safe return of over 200 female students who were kidnapped by Boko Haram, an Islamic Jihadist and Takfiri terrorist organisation based in north-east Nigeria.
