MONDEOR policing area has been experiencing an increase in the crime of theft of motor vehicles.
The vehicles most targeted are VW Polo Vivos and Toyota Yarises. The cars are mostly stolen while parked on driveways, outside yards and on pavements. The victims park their vehicles outside on the pavement while going into a house, or at shopping centres or in church car parks. The most affected suburbs are Glenvista, Southgate, Ridgeway, Suideroord, Mondeor, Bassonia and Winchester Hills.
The station commander of Mondeor Police Station, Col JJ Bezuidenhoudt, has appealed to communities to be vigilant at all times, to invest in a good security system for their vehicles and to avoid parking their vehicles in secluded areas. Motorists are also warned to make sure all doors and windows are locked when parking their vehicles, as well as to park in well-lit areas.
If residents are in doubt about the safety of an area, they can call their nearest police station for advice.
