De Villiers Street construction still a headache for some residents

Correspondences were sent to Shaakira Chohan for comment, she has not replied.

IT seems some of the residents are inconvenienced by the multi-million Rand development of the linear park along a 1.2km stretch of De Villiers Street, Turffontein.

In April, the COURIER reported that some residents were not happy about the disruption caused by the construction work. The then Ward 124 Clr, Sydney Radebe, assured the residents that though there will be disturbances, the construction will continue as scheduled.

Also, Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) Development Manager, Shaakira Chohan, said they have been liaising with residents on an on-going and continuous basis to update them on the construction taking place. “Disruptions due to construction were inevitable and the team is doing their best to ensure that the work is executed properly and affected parties are informed timeously of the works,” she said.

However, Colleen Lok is very frustrated with the construction in front of her house. She said the compactor is making her life and her family very miserable. “There are cracks in my walls because of it and it feels like an earthquake is happening wherever they use it. Who will incur all the costs when they finished?” she asked.
