THE last few months has seen a growing concern from community-based organisations pertaining to the escalation of incidents of abuse against women, children and human trafficking in the Johannesburg South, particularly in Ward 55, 56, 57 and 124.
As a result of this disturbing trend, My Lillies of Hope (MLOH), a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) based in La Rochelle and Tornolux Non Profit Company (NPC) based in Kenilworth have embarked on a joint initiative to facilitate a process of engaging stakeholders in developing a collective strategy to ameliorate this scourge. These stakeholders will include, but will not be limited to, all the councillors of the aforementioned wards and relevant law enforcement agencies (SAPS and JMPD), CPFs (Moffatview and Booysens), Sector Managers, social crime units, NGOs, CBOs, FBOs and all other interested and affected parties.
After a series of informal meetings and consultations with various stakeholders, a first formal meeting of the initiative was held on October 25 at the MLOH offices in La Rochelle. The meeting resolved to establish a task team whose Terms of Reference (ToR) include facilitating the establishment of an all-inclusive stakeholder forum by November 24. The forum will be a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder partnership.
