TENSION was high on March 26 outside a food factory in Southdale in the south of Johannesburg as workers demanded better living wages.
The National Union of Food Beverage Wine Spirit and Allied Workers marched on Landsborough Street in protest of current wages paid to employees.

Union spokesperson Lufuno Muvhali said there was a gap in wages that employees thought to be a discrepancy. He said they were demanding to have an increase from around R3 000 to R6 500 for casual staff and R9 000 for those who were permanent staff.
He said there were a lot of workers who were still not permanent staff even after prolonged service to the company.
“There are people here who have been working for close to 17 years and are still not permanent,” Muvhali said.
“We demand better living wages first and foremost.”
He added that there had been talks with management, who to date were not “seeing their plight”.
The COURIER contact the outlet’s management, who confirmed a statement would be issued.
Landsborough Street still had boulders and rocks in the road. Asked if the protesters were responsible for the rock-filled road, Muvhali refuted the accusation.
