Resident at her wits’ end about unsafe electrical connections

Resident in fear that one day her apartment will go up in flames.

MICHELLE Corthing, a resident of 52 Gordon Court, is livid about the electrical connections in her apartment which have been a mess since she moved into the apartment in South Hills in 2012.

She is scared that the same might happen to their apartments like those which went up in flames recently. All of her electrical connections are in disarray and there are no main fittings to protect the connections.

Corthing said these cables are in disarray because they don’t have money to install proper cables and the City should see to it that their flats are well secured.

“I have sleepless nights just thinking maybe this is the day where my apartment will go up in flames. I can’t live like this while we as residents of South Hills have a councillor to take care of these things. If the councillor doesn’t get a wake-up call, many flats are still going to be blazed with fire,” said Corthing.

Corthing believes if the Ward 57 councillor, Faeeza Chame, can visit her house and see the state and condition of the wiring she will get assistance to get the matter sorted out much quicker.

Faeeza told COURIER that these faulty connections are a concern and she would love to see everything fixed for residents.

“The thing is some residents don’t pay electricity and rent leaving the city with no money to pay for service delivery. The city rolled out a programme to install new meter boxes but residents refused those boxes to be installed. I do understand why they refused because some of them are unemployed and won’t have money to pay for electricity and rent,” she said.

“What needs to be done now, is for council to try and create job opportunities for residents so that they can have money to pay their bills but at the moment a solution to fix these faulty connections is underway,” said Faeeza.

Faeeza went on to say that families that were affected by the fire on September 18 at Northam Court were assisted with blankets, clothing and other necessities and she will keep offering her assistance and renovations of the court will take place in due time.
