Power outage in Regents Park leaves appliances torched
“My DSTV Explora is broken just because of City Power members.” - Mirriam Mphoko
VICTORIA Street residents were stunned by a sudden power surge and outage which damaged their electrical appliances in the early morning of September 27 in Regents Park.
Residents say they thought it was just a normal outage where electricity will just go off for a few hours. But what surprised them was when their electrical appliances wouldn’t work when they tried switching them on.
Residents suspect City Power members, as residents claim that around 4am one of the street’s residents saw a City Power vehicle parked at a substation. After a few minutes, when City Power vacated the substation, the electricity started going on and off, which caused the damage to electrical appliances.

“My DSTV Explora is broken just because of City Power members. When I woke up I went to my television stand to switch on my TV, but to my surprise it didn’t want to turn on. I just thought the signal was off, but a few minutes later when I tried warming up my food the microwave wouldn’t turn on. My next-door neighbour came to me and told me that some of her appliances are broken due to the power cut, and we subsequently found out eight other houses were affected as well,” explained Mirriam Mphoko.
Another affected resident, Siboniso Mdluli, shared the same experience and said, “My DSTV Explora and my sound system were broken and my back room on the property nearly went up in flames as all the wiring is damaged and burnt.”

Residents are scared that what happened to South Hills flats may happen to their houses as well.
Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame told COURIER she was aware of the outage, but the people who can assist in the matter are City Power.
