Ward 56 Councillor Michael Crichton shares his role in the ward
Ward 56 shares his role in the ward.
IN this week’s chat with councillors, COURIER was in touch with Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton.
Since your appointment, what have you achieved?
I have worked very hard to apply the rule of law in the ward. Before I took over, the ward was ramped with drug abuse, prostitution, petty crime and illegal trading. Secondly, my good relationship with the JMPD which has led to a big raid in the ward at Diaz Mall on October 18, where we dismantled illegal structures and got rid of illegal dealings that were happening. I have also allowed the community to bring innovative ideas that will better our ward.
Are you involved in community projects?
Yes, one of my biggest projects currently is renovating Res Park. The park was a mess, sewage water was running all over but we managed to defuse the situation. Even the mayor was there on October 27, I want the park to be attractive and clean.
What can you do or can’t you do for your community?
I have the responsibility for oversight in ensuring that services are happening within the ward and make a positive change where I see required.
Ward 56 residents have experienced illegal evictions. What’s your take on this?
Eviction is such a stressful process because we don’t get any information from the Sheriff who deals with the evictions. In regards to illegal evictions, I am looking at having a meeting with various stakeholders, such as SAPS, JMPD and the Sheriff, on how we can resolve this debacle.
When these evictions take place we are not notified and even Moffat View SAPS told me they also need to be notified before evictions take place but that is not the case.
Before your term ends, what do you want to see in the ward?
I want to see the ward being a safe place. Secondly, I want investors to come back so young people can get employed.
Thirdly, make sure that our people get the service they deserve, like street lights and parks. Lastly, make sure that our grass is always cut on sidewalks.
