Community gives back to SPCA

Beside people seizing the opportunity for the overnight stay and spending the night caring for pets and farm animals, others donated money.

JOHANNESBURG SPCA hosted the Give Back Challenge challenge on October 27, where community members were allowed to sleep overnight with any of the furry members of their choice to raise funds.

Chantal Soobramoney from JSPCA said the event was a success as more awareness was created to help the animals.

“People who heeded the call enjoyed being with us on the day. I am glad there is awareness out there and people are willing to help our animals,” she said.Beside people seizing the opportunity for the overnight stay and spending the night caring for pets and farm animals, others donated money.

Rukeya Harris brought two of her daughters, Aniesa and Na’eemah. It was Aniesa’s 15th birthday and instead of celebrating it with friends she decided to donate her time and money to Misty, a cat.

“Aniesa will be donating monthly towards the kennel and Na’eemah made her donation as well to Macie in one of the kennels,” said Rukeya.

The SPCA general manager, Celeste Houseman, said there is a dire need to educate the public on responsible animal ownership and care programmes. The SPCA is active in the prevention of cruelty to animals and maintains a high level of welfare to suffering animals. Above all, it takes all kinds of support from donors and volunteers as the SPCA is not funded by state entities.

The SPCA encourages the public to make use of the kennels’ boarding facilities during Guy Fawkes, Diwali and New Year periods where fireworks are in use. The fireworks have a negative impact on animals as well puts them in danger.
