#16DaysOfActivism: Speak up and report abuse

I want to encourage any person that is in a violent/abusive relationship to speak up and to report the abuser. - Clr Faeeza Chame

On November 25 every year we start the 16 Days of Activism against Children and Women Abuse.

Police statistics indicate the murder rate for women has increased by 16 per cent in the past five years, and more than 18 000 child rape cases were recorded over the 2017/2018 financial year.

I want to encourage any person that is in a violent/abusive relationship to speak up and to report the abuser. In most cases, it has been found that the victim is scared to speak out and this gives the abuser more power over the victim.

Your upbringing also does contribute, if you grew up in a household where parents fight all the time, chances are you can do what your parents are doing. Also, our children are exposed to the internet, bad friends and bad habits.

My message to men – please try and be men, don’t abuse your partners or children during the 16 Days of Activism against Children and Women Abuse (November 25 to December 10). Not only these dates but every day.

Please wear your white ribbon during this time. It is a symbol of peace.
