Gold Reef City’s Back O’ the Moon restaurant closes its doors
The original Sophiatown-based Back O’ the Moon was a unique place for people from all walks of life to meet and enjoy great food and music.
GOLD Reef City’s Back O’ the Moon restaurant closed its doors on January 27, after more than 20 years of offering its patrons fine dining in a lavish, 1950s-inspired replication of the iconic Sophiatown shebeen.
Marketing manager of Gold Reef City, Feron Somiah, said, “While it is sad to see the venue close down, there are new and exciting developments on the way. We will be announcing these soon, so watch this space.”
The original Sophiatown-based Back O’ the Moon was a unique place for people from all walks of life to meet and enjoy great food and music. The venue was immortalised by Miriam Makeba in the late 50s stage play, King Kong, when she sang Back O’ the Moon as a tribute to the rich history of Sophiatown.
Over the years, visitors to Back O’ the Moon at Gold Reef City have enjoyed excellent food, impeccable service and superb entertainment in a venue which was as much a feast for the eyes as it was for the palate.
Somiah said, “Patrons to the Back O’ the Moon were hosted to some of South Africa’s best music talent. Many a night of jazz and R&B was enjoyed by visitors to the venue. While the Back O’ the Moon may have closed its doors, Gold Reef City is committed to providing the best in food and entertainment and our new plans for the venue will offer our visitors an unforgettable experience.”
