Golden wedding anniversary for Glenvista couple

“Communication is very important and talking over any differences you may have. Having the Lord in your life can only make your marriage stronger,” they agreed.

MARJORIE and Hennie Dumas of Glenvista celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on April 12.

They met in Kimberley and have four children – Frankie, who is married to Elize; Anthony, who is married to Michelle; Monica, who is married to Anthony and Annemarie – and 10 grandchildren – Aldrin, Bodine, Calvin, Ethan, Aiden, Lindie, Nicole, Shawnae, Damon and Haley.

Marjorie worked for SA Railways when they were first married and Hennie worked for a private motor company before applying to the South African Police Service, moving up from constable to lieutenant colonel. He also served in the South African bush war and in 1989 the couple and family moved to Johannesburg where they resided in SAPS married quarters in Diepkloof, Soweto. In 1990 Marjorie, as a clerk, worked for the deputy provincial commissioner, Bushie Engelbrecht. In 1999 Hennie was retired on a medical pension and Marjorie retired in 2009. They moved to Glenvista four years ago.

When asked what they attribute their long and happy marriage to, they both said the Lord.

“He has kept us close through all these years and looked after us and our wonderful family, who we think are the best in the whole world. We are extremely privileged to have such a loving and caring family and thank God for our health.”

Marjorie enjoys doing the parkrun most Saturdays, loves reading and spending time with her family and Hennie reads the Bible in his spare time. They attend Revival City Church in Brackenhurst.

What advice would they give to a young couple starting out in marriage?

“Communication is very important and talking over any differences you may have. Having the Lord in your life can only make your marriage stronger,” they agreed.

They celebrated this momentous occasion with a dinner, which their family kept as a surprise from them.
