Suspect arrested for bribery in Kenilworth

Residents are cautioned not to become involved in corrupt activities with city employees as there are consequences for all.

A MALE suspect appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of bribery on April 29.

He was arrested on April 28 in Kenilworth after a successful sting operation involving the City’s Group Forensics and Investigations Service Department (GFIS) with SAPS.

The suspect, an ex contractor from Bash Electrical had removed an electricity meter from a resident’s home in Leo Street, Kenilworth. He later demanded an amount of R5 000 to replace the meter and reconnect the electricity.

Unfortunately for him the resident had contacted City Power on the matter who in turn alerted GFIS and the arrest was made on the scene.

Executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, councillor Herman Mashaba said, “Theft, bribery and corruption have no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure that residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.”

Residents are encouraged to report any fraud and corruption activities through the City’s 24-hour tip-off hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.

At the same time residents are also cautioned not to become involved in corrupt activities with city employees as there are consequences for all.
