Gender-based violence survivors honoured
The survivors are women who used to live in the shelters due to their life struggles, therefore, Edcon established a campaign called Edgars UNiTE 100 Women Initiative.
EDCON and Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) held a graduation ceremony on August 15 to honour survivors of gender-based violence at Edcon Retail Academy in Ormonde.
The survivors are women who used to live in the shelters due to their life struggles, therefore, Edcon established a campaign called Edgars UNiTE 100 Women Initiative.
The purpose of the campaign is to develop sewing skills and teach these women how to establish their businesses.
This campaign was launched in 2015 by Edcon in support of the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE campaign, which aims to end gender-based violence in partnership with UN Women and DSD.
The women started the training with no skills but in the end, they learnt more about sewing.
They were honoured with certificates and were gifted with sewing machines to help them start their own business.

Thembelihle Nicole Msipha was awarded the best student award for 2019 as she proved to have all the skills and knowledge.
“I’m happy and glad to win this award at this point of time,” said Msipha.
