According to Booysens SAPS communications officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik, the constables spotted a white double-cab bakkie, which turned out to not be the one reported stolen. The bakkie spotted by the officers had six occupants.
“The members approached the vehicle and identified themselves as police officials. They then asked to search the occupants. Upon searching an unknown male, one of the officials felt something hard on the suspect’s waist.
“The officer took it out and it was a firearm. The suspect was asked who the firearm belonged to and he said it belonged to him.
“The suspect was then asked to provide a licence and he said he doesn’t have it in his possession as he didn’t buy the firearm from a gun shop,” said van Emmerik.
As the officers were inspecting the firearm, they noticed the serial number on the firearm was filed off.
The suspect was taken to Booysesn Police Station for further investigations.
SAPS has confirmed that the stolen bakkie has not been recovered. The bakkie which they found in possession of the suspect was legally owned by the suspect and the bakkie was returned to the suspect’s family.
