WATCH: ANC and Sanco women hand memorandum of grievances to SAPS

In accepting the memorandum, Moffat View SAPS spokesperson Capt Jeff Phora said gender-based violence is something that they view in a very serious light.

AFRICAN National Congress (ANC) and South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) women handed a memorandum of grievances about gender-based violence over to Moffat View SAPS on September 9.

Secretary of the ANC in Ward 23 Nomazwe Ntlokwana said they were there as part of the delegation of women from the seven wards in Zone 11.

“We are here to speak to members of the SAPS to firstly know what is the progress with regards to cases which involve gender-based violence.

“We also want to use this platform and opportunity to say there should be no parole for the perpetrators who are part of gender-based violence.

“Life sentences should be given to all perpetrators who have killed women and children,” explained Ntlokwana.

She said as women of this country, they cannot sit down and fold their arms when women are dying at the hands of those they love. They cannot keep quite if their daughters are killed.

“Am I next? Are you next? Is my daughter next? This is the time for us as women to stand up and take action. There is a war out there that is directed at ordinary women, so we are not going to keep quiet anymore,” said Ntlokwana.

In accepting the memorandum, Moffat View SAPS spokesperson Capt Jeff Phora said gender-based violence is something that they view in a very serious light.

“On October 3, Moffat View SAPS will be launching our victim empowerment centre (VEC) so victims of gender-based violence will be treated with a velvet glove – children and women will have privacy when coming to the station to report their cases. This shows that we are taking this matter seriously; you must be treated with dignity,” he said.
