Advanced driver training could reduce fatalities on roads

Not only will you upskill your drivers to equip them to handle the challenging South African roads, but it can help companies save money as well.

IN 2016, the number of fatalities on South African roads saw a much higher increase than what was seen in the previous 10 years. Since then, while there have been minor decreases occasionally, the fatalities are still nowhere near what they were pre-2016.

If the efforts so far have not resulted in the major improvement we need, then the question we need to ask is what will bring about significant change? The managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herber, says real change lies in commitment from government, businesses, and individuals to improve our road safety.

“MasterDrive is dedicated to bringing about this change by providing advanced driver training for corporates and individuals.

“The core training of our business is teaching South Africans to drive defensively. This is driving in a manner that can prevent potential collisions, despite the incorrect actions of other road users in various weather, road and traffic conditions. As 85 to 90 per cent of crashes are as a result of human error, training all drivers in defensive driving could result in drastic changes to road fatality statistics.”

MasterDrive encourages companies to send their drivers for training which can benefit the company in numerous ways.

“Not only will you upskill your drivers to equip them to handle the challenging South African roads, but it can help companies save money as well. Drivers learn to reduce wear and tear on the vehicles and to drive more economically, which is especially important as petrol prices soar. Certain insurers also provide reductions on premiums if drivers receive defensive driver training.”

We also ensure that individuals who do not drive for a company can access driver training in the form of caster classes. These are intense training sessions that addresses some of the common challenges that drivers face on the roads, such as techniques for night driving. Training should be just as accessible to individuals who are committed to reducing the number of crashes as what it is to those who drive for a living,” he added.

If every driver in South Africa, along with businesses and government, commits to reducing the high fatality rate on the road, the change could be significant. One of the best ways to help drivers make this commitment is through defensive driver training.
