Councillor Mongameli Mnyameni visits Faraday regarding water overflow

Ward Clr Mongameli Mnyameni took it upon himself to establish what the nature of the complaint might be on December 13.

RESIDENTS of Faraday in Johannesburg, and motorists around the area, are up in arms over a water spill which has been left unattended since last year.

Ward Clr Mongameli Mnyameni took it upon himself to establish what the nature of the complaint might be on December 13.

Mnyameni said the water spill, which has resulted in water stagnation, forming unhealthy puddles, is also causing damage to vehicles and to the merchandise street vendors sell.

“The water smells and has become a health hazard. People use this place every day and with such conditions, they might get sick,” said Mnyameni.

Motorists and residents suspect the cause of the spill might be because of a burst pipe.

“People can’t continue living like this. I have escalated the matter to the relevant departments,’’said Mnyameni.

A motorist who wished to remain anonymous said the spill can cause an accident if left unattended.

“This is inhumane, also disturbing. Something must be done to avoid possible accidents and injuries, more especially at night. But because the councillor came here, I believe something will be done,” said the motorist.

Mnyameni said this matter must be unattended to soon as the residents can’t enjoy the festive season in such conditions.

“I have met with Faraday Taxi Association management as this affects them daily. I told them that the matter will be resolved,” concluded Mnyameni.

Johannesburg Water communication and marketing manager Isaac Dludlu said they are not aware of the matter, and suggested that the concerned councillor should log in a complaint and “we will take it from there”.

“We advise all citizens to report water and sewer problems in good time. The only way we can assist when such things happen is if people log in calls,” said Dludlu.
