Special Gogo’s continue to feed their families through Tracy’s garden

Tracy set to help young people as well.

Sitting and exchanging conversations about their youth days is not what Special Gogo’s is about.

The elderly, who call themselves Special Gogo’s from Jackson informal settlement, spend their time at Tracy Tsikwa’s garden.

The garden helps the elderly to keep busy and put some food on the table for their families.

Some of the elderly rely on the garden to provide for their families.

The elderly gather at Tracy’s home every day from 8am to 9am to commence with their exercises and then proceed to the garden to sow and clean it.

Tracy welcomes everyone who loves sowing and is prepared to do activities elderly people do to keep fit and remain healthy.

The 59-year-old runs a daycare centre and also manages the elderly people on their exercise project and the work they do in the garden.

“I hate to see old people having nothing to do while I have something good for them.

“I admire these elderly people that come here. They have massive respect towards each other and they respect time,’’ said Tracy.

Garden helps

The garden doesn’t only help Tracy and the elderly, but helps the community at large.

When there are funerals in the settlement, Tracy gives vegetables and food parcels to help the family which is need at that time.

“Families that do not have enough food to eat come here and I provide them with food, not only when there are funerals.

“Poverty is not a choice; therefore, if I’m able to lend a hand let me do so because maybe tomorrow it might be me,” said Tracy.

Prayer

Whenever Tracy and the elderly meet, they begin with prayer as this is the way they believe keeps them connected every time.

Just recently, Tracy helped a youth organisation called Eagle with food donations to run their function, which was a success.

“As I always say, helping out is key and I believe that should remain that way until I die,” said Tracy.
