Gauteng provincial commissioner Lt Gen Elias Mawela and Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko led operation O Kae Molao in Booysens policing precinct on May 28.
They started with a roadblock on both sides of Kliprivier Drive where various law enforcements were present. They also went to various shops in Turffontein to check for lockdown compliance and expired food.
Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko said they were in Booysens because it is one of the problematic areas in Gauteng.
“There are car hijackings, house robberies, and business robberies in this area. That is why we are focusing here today. We have the roadblock here because Kliprivier Drive is an escape route for the hijackers, whether they are coming from the City centre or here within the Booysens precinct, Turffontein or Rosettenville, and all the way to Thokoza.
“We are also making sure that people are complying with the Covid-19 regulations. They must wear masks and they must have a reason to be on the road. Again, also public education where we continuously encourage people to sanitise and wash their hands. We hope our people will continue to cooperate and make sure that Gauteng is a safe and better place,” she said.
There were some transgressions from the motorists and the MEC condemned those who did not obey the rules of the road. “Others were not carrying proper documents. One guy from Congo said he has asylum papers. There were unroadworthy cars and you wouldn’t know whether they are stolen or what. However, the police were there to do their job,” explained Mazibuko.
In Turffontein, High Street, the police arrested a man who was in possession of a soldier’s uniform. Together with the MEC, the police went to shops to check for lockdown compliance and expired food. Expired food was found in one of the take-away shops and supermarkets.
