Mondeor CPF chairperson Mike Fontes shares valuable tips to keep safe in the South of Johannesburg.
• Street robberies where pedestrians, including school children and domestic workers, are robbed of their money and cellphones are increasing. The perpetrators usually come in a car and are sometimes armed. It is recommended that people walk in groups.
• House robberies are on the increase throughout the precinct. These typically take place during the day. Suspects come in vehicles and usually lift the perimeter gate and then barge through the front door for a quick in and out robbery.
• Theft of vehicles, especially around public spaces such as malls and recreation centres are common. Vehicles parked outside residences are also being targeted. If you have visitors please park behind locked gates. Where this is not possible inform your security company and request patrols.
The CPF continually works with SAPS and security to address crime challenges and put appropriate policing responses in place.
Support your local CPF – if you see something then say something.
Remember in a crime emergency:
• Push your panic button if you are contracted to armed reaction.
• Call for SAPS on 071 675 7327 or 10111. If you have a smartphone you can also request SAPS through applications such as Namola and MySAPS App.
• Notify your community group monitored by the CPF. Community groups that do not have CPF members on are not really effective in responding to crime. Make sure your local WhatsApp group is monitored by CPF members as they can also respond and or can coordinate an appropriate response.
