Poppy was rescued by JSPCA on November 14 after she managed to escape from her home due to all the fireworks going off.
“She was extremely scared and disorientated. When we tried to approach her she yelped and it sounded like someone was hitting her. We eventually managed to pick her up and load her into the car and that was when we noticed something was wrong with her leg,” explained Liana Marx from JSPCA.
Poppy suffered a radial head luxation of her elbow joint. This is a traumatic injury that can be caused by a motor vehicle accident.
“She has been living with this injury for over six weeks and has learned ways of coping. “The vet from Orion Vet assessed her and performed a correctional surgical technique, recreating the joint using screws and wire.

“Poppy will undergo intensive physiotherapy by our resident veterinarian to help her learn to use her leg again and to help rebuild the muscle mass on her shoulder. She has extensive muscle wasting which occurs when a leg is not used for a long time.”
Poppy’s surgery has cost the JSPCA almost R3 500. If you can make a kind donation towards her surgery, please use the following details: Account name – JHB SPCA, FNB Southdale, branch code 254 205, account number 623 6250 8396 with reference ‘Poppy’.
She is also looking for her new forever home. If you are interested in adopting Poppy, please contact the kennels on 011 681 3600.
